Psychedelic Couture Dress | Custom Betsey Johnson for Willroy | Altman & Co., 5th Ave NY
This is not just a vintage dress—it’s a one-of-a-kind couture piece, custom designed by Betsey Johnson herself in the late 1960s during her early tenure at Altman & Co., 5th Avenue, New York.
My mother personally selected the fabric, and the dress was made to her exact measurements and design preferences. It was fitted by Betsey Johnson and created as a unique piece under the Willroy label—before Betsey became a household name.
The bold psychedelic paisley print is a signature of Johnson’s trailblazing style, emblematic of the era’s fearless fashion revolution. It’s a wearable work of art that captures both the spirit of the 60s and the hand of a rising fashion legend.
The dress features a stylish green zip-back closure—not invisible, but intentionally visible and fashionable, adding a splash of mod flair to the silhouette.
On me (I’m 5’2½”), the dress falls to just to the knee. On my mother—who was taller—it hit mid-thigh, as was the trend at the time.
Total length from neck to hem: 37 inches.
This piece looks stunning whether styled as a mini or a more classic silhouette. It’s incredibly flattering either way.
