Late 19th to Early 20th Century Hand-Carved Chinese Guardian Warrior Statue – Guan Yu (Guan Gong) on Bronze Stand

$4,800.00

This exceptional hand-carved wood statue represents Guan Yu (also known as Guan Gong or Kuan Ti), the legendary Chinese general who became deified as a symbol of loyalty, honor, and martial protection. This piece was acquired by the seller’s great-great-grandparents during travels in China, likely in the late 19th or early 20th century, and has remained in the family for generations.

Carved from wood and finished in rich red, black, and gold paint with gilded detailing, the figure stands confidently, holding his iconic guandao pole weapon, with a fierce expression and meticulously detailed armor. A dramatic carved demon face adorns the center of his belt or breastplate, reflecting traditional symbolism of protection and power.

The figure is mounted on its original lacquered wooden base, which in turn sits atop a broad, heavy stand—believed to be either solid bronze or copper, with etched border details in a classical Chinese key pattern. The stand is included in the sale.

Features:

  • Late Qing Dynasty to early Republic period (approx. 1890–1920)

  • Original family provenance from China, with history available

  • Guardian figure of Guan Yu (Guan Gong), god of war and honor

  • Intricate hand-painted and gilded details throughout

  • Carved wooden base and original bronze or copper display stand

  • Full carving on all sides; intended for display in the round

Approx. Dimensions:

  • Statue alone: ~22” H

  • Total height with stand: ~1’

  • Stand base: ~6.5” square (top); broad, heavy weight

Excellent antique condition. Surface wear, oxidation, and patina consistent with age. No visible losses or repairs to the statue; some expected scuffing on the base and stand.

Provenance:

From a distinguished family collection with longstanding ties to Asia, including a direct acquisition in China by the owner’s great-great-grandparents.
