$3,400.00

This rare and expressive hand-carved figure depicts a kneeling court official or ceremonial performer, rendered with extraordinary detail and a dignified, lifelike presence. Likely of Chinese or Japanese origin, the piece reflects theatrical or imperial influences—seen in the sweeping posture, richly layered robes, and ornate floral medallions.

The figure is painted in soft ochres, aged golds, and deep reds, with a striking black headdress and dramatic arched sleeve. The reverse of the robe features delicate flowerwork and natural weathering, showcasing the craftsmanship and patina of age.

This piece was acquired by my great-grandparents, who lived in both Japan and China in the early 20th century and amassed a remarkable collection of East Asian art. It has remained in our family ever since and is a beautiful testament to the cultural artistry of the region.
